It's intended with wheels in mind. I have never played it with a controller before, but with a wheel and pedals, if you play at 80%, you can still get first place even when screwing up a few times. Doesn't feel like on ice at all. Unless you go into an event which is blatantly stacked against you, with opponents driving much faster cars than yours.
