Th main quest sucks, but you do not have to do it. The cool kids play the campaign game, then they do the quest to free their siblings, and then they ignore the Neretze's Folly main quest and do whatever the hell they please. Sandbox also lets you do whatever the hell you please, but you do not get your family members.
